RESPOND: Real-Time Trauma-Informed Practice for Foster Youth

  • 39 Steps

About

A groundbreaking, practice-first training program built around the original RESPOND framework — equipping every adult in a foster youth's life with the real-time skills, language, and judgment to respond, not react, in any moment. Most trauma-informed training tells you what trauma is. This program shows you what to do about it— right now, in the middle of a meltdown, at the dinner table, in the classroom, during a home visit. Created by Dr. Danisha Keating — psychologist, trauma-informed specialist, former foster youth, and legal guardian of her siblings — RESPOND is built from the inside out. It bridges the gap between clinical theory and the lived reality of caring for foster youth by anchoring every lesson in the moments that actually happen in real homes, schools, and casework. The program opens with Dr. Keating's story and the foundational science of trauma — how early adversity rewires the developing brain, what neglect actually costs a child neurologically, and why the same child can look completely different at home versus school. From there, it moves into the seven-step RESPOND framework itself, where each letter becomes a concrete skill: recognizing early warning signs, evaluating danger levels accurately, stabilizing a dysregulated body, protecting when safety is at stake, orienting someone back to the present, navigating with real language in real time, and debriefing in a way that repairs connection rather than deepens shame. The expected outcome is a caregiver and professional community that no longer hesitates when a child punches a wall, makes a verbal threat, or shuts down entirely — because they have practiced what to say, what to do, and when to call for help. Every scenario, every framework, and every piece of language in this program was created from the ground up for the foster care community.
