My impulsiveness was really determination to build a better life for myself
My impulsiveness was really determination to build a better life for myself

Have you ever wondered what people would refer to you as? I have.

And to be honest, in the wrong crowd… It can be really messy to hear what someone says about you.

But in the right crowd, it can be very uplifting..

I once was told that I was impulsive. And 10 years later, I still reflect on it.

In the moment, I sat back and asked the person, “what does “impulsive” mean?” And this friend told me that I make rash decisions. Didn’t think things through. Didn’t ask for people’s opinions. And rushed my decisions.

I responded back that I had been thinking about my decision for 6 months and it felt unnecessary to ask someone their opinion when it didn’t impact them.

Now, I had this same conversation with someone else years later and they said I was scrappy. There were some choices I made they didn’t understand but it was because they were the long game plan and not short term plans.

For example, I was 3 weeks away from finishing a semester with As and Bs and I got a full time job offer. When I asked to finish the semester, the person said no.

I decided to finish off the semester. I was in 6 courses and dropping them would have put me a year behind in school.

I’d soon find other work but to some people, education was the wrong route for my problems.

However 15ish years later, I’ve been on the other side and found my footing. It wasn’t easy but I learned that there were moments in life that we just had to put on our big kid boots, and get moving forward.

Being a bootstrap person means that you’re going to get up when you’ve been knocked down. That you have determination to finish, and you have the will to keep trying. It also means you have community who will encourage you to go and do what you need to do.

Not everyone will understand it.

That’s because it’s your calling, not theirs.

I have learned to relabel “impulsive” with “bootstrap.” My quick thinking and ability to see what I need to do, has landed me where I am at today.

I’m not afraid to try. Even when it’s hard, I’ll get back up again. And I’ll make tables for others to join me.

Let’s bootstrap it.
